Fun Holiday Activities for the Kids by Julia Winston
When it’s school holidays and the kids are home alone and bored the challenge is on to try and come up with some fun and entertaining activities. You can take them to the zoo, bowling or to a museum. But what if the weather outside is disgusting and you don’t feel like leaving the house? Then games such as Monopoly, online bingo and Uno are a fun alternative.
The easy way out is to shove them in front of the TV for a few hours. They are watching some shows or DVDS. Do you really need them to be babysit by the television? Wii is fun for a few hours but not all day every day. They need to do something which is going to stimulate them and make them think.
The key is to be organized. If they wake up late and then are slow to have breakfast and get dressed than you will find it’s close to 11 o’clock by the time you want to leave the house. Next thing they will want lunch and then the whole day is wasted. This isn’t the way to go about it. You need to be ahead of the game.
Try to leave the house by 8.30-9am so you reach your destination at a civilized hour. It also means that you can do some things before they start to think about food. Getting back around 3-4pm is a good full day. Then they can watch TV or be on the computer while you are thinking about dinner. This is a much better outcome.
If the weather is bad outside than try to think of things that they can do indoors. Online bingo is fun. It is a cute activity especially for the younger kids who can get exposed and familiar with numbers. Other online games such as Battleship, Connect 4 and Tic Tac Toe are also fun. It will depend on the age of the kids and what they are into.
Another idea is to combine an activity at home with a field trip. You can build up from one to the other which means that they will look forward to it as well as pay more attention once they are there. For instance before going to the zoo, explain to them the significance of each of the animals and what makes them unique. Then when they see them in the flesh they will appreciate it even more.
